Cinnamon Bun Tasting at the Nordic Bakery

I was lucky enough to be invited to the Nordic Bakery earlier this week for a cinnamon bun tasting event as part of their Cinnamon Bun Week celebrations!  Cinnamon bun day officially falls on 4th October, however, the Nordic Bakery have taken this a step further and will be celebrating throughout the whole week of 29th September to 4th October by unveiling a new flavoured bun every day of the week!

IMG_0256

We were asked to sample the 5 different cinnamon buns that would be on offer throughout the week and vote on which one we liked the most.  The flavours included: raisins & lemon glaze, chocolate button, apple, blueberries and custard & almond.

nordicbakery2

All the buns were delicious, it was extremely difficult to chose a favourite.  I would say the apple and chocolate buttons were particularly delectable.  They were soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, especially on the glazed areas.  The buns were sweet, but light a the same time.

The Nordic Bakery has several branches throughout London.  I visited the Marylebone branch on Dorset Street.  It is a quaint bakery with a cosy atmosphere.  They also have a cookbook featuring their recipes, including cinnamon bun recipes.  Downstairs, the restaurant has a small photography gallery featuring photographs taken by customers and their dining experiences.

The evening was very enjoyable,  I had the opportunity to meet other food bloggers over some cinnamon buns! We even got a goodie bag with a cinnamon bun to-go, and a bottle of  blueberry cordial.  I’d definitely recommend heading over to the Nordic Bakery next week in celebration of cinnamon bun week!

The Breakfast Club

“An alternative brunch experience”

Overview:

Price: £15 – 20
Overall rating: 3 stars
Cuisine: Breakfast/brunch
Location:  Soho

My thoughts:

I had been itching to try the Breakfast Club for a while.  I was eager to sample the famous breakfast heaven with queues literally coming out of the door and down the street.  The day I visited was no exception, we had to queue for 30 minutes (even on a weekday morning!)

When I entered the restaurant, I realised why this was the case;  the restaurant is quite small, with perhaps only 15 tables.  The décor is quirky: with a pinboard scaling the inside wall that guests can pin messages, postcards or almost anything really, to.  This, combined with fairy lights on the wall and coins glued to the rim of the bar, can create an alternative brunch experience.

breakfast club4

breakfast club7

The restaurant’s theme is carried through to all aspects, including bespoke ‘Breakfast Club’ mugs, for example. All in all the vibe is fairly casual and relaxed.

IMG_7112

The breakfast and brunch menu is wide ranging, featuring British and American classics as well as some more unusual additions such as the falafel wrap.  I ordered the Veggie All-American which was served with Pancakes with maple syrup, scrambled eggs, one veggie sausage, mushrooms and home-style fried potatoes.  The portions were very large, and therefore quite good value for money.  The potatoes were tasty, as were the mushrooms and eggs, however, the food overall was quite oily. Although I cannot fault the food to any large degree, I have had better breakfasts’ elsewhere in London, and food presentation could be improved.  I also ordered a cappuccino, which was strong and bitter.

breakfast club3

My friends ordered the Pancakes and Berries, which were served with maple syrup and whipped cream.  Again, their feedback indicated that although the meal was enjoyable, they had tried better pancakes before.

breakfast club2

The service was good.  The staff were friendly. Customers should be prepared to queue for up to an hour, as the restaurant does not take reservations at certain times of day.   The Breakfast Club is part of a chain with several branches across London.  I, personally visited the Soho branch. In addition to breakfast and brunch, the Breakfast club is also open for lunch, dinner and drinks.

Overall, I’d recommend visiting the Breakfast Club for the experience and atmosphere, rather than the food.  Perhaps the lengthy queues and popularity of the restaurant had heightened my expectations, but  the food was fairly average and therefore does not have much repeat value, which was the general consensus amongst the girls and myself.

Orso

“Hidden Gem: Authentic Italian in Covent Garden”

Overview:

Overall rating: 4 stars
Price: £35 for 3 courses & a drink
Cuisine: Italian
Location:  Covent Garden

Review:

I was lucky enough to be invited to Orso, an authentic Italian restaurant situated just off Covent Garden market.  The entrance takes you down a flight of stairs to the basement, where the restaurant is situated.  Even so, it does not feel dark or claustrophobic, with wall lamps and candlelit tables contributing to a warm ambiance.

Orsointerior

As I entered the restaurant, I was warmly greeted by a waitress who informed me of the story behind Orso.  The restaurant opened in 1985, and the owner named it ‘Orso’ (Italian for bear) after a dog that used to frequent the bars and restaurants of Milan and Venice whilst he was there.  An image of Orso the dog is proudly placed near the entrance, along with several black and white shots of scenes of Italian life, and Italian actors and actresses.  Such themes accentuate the authentic Italian experience.

Orsophotos

Orsodog

The meal was kicked off by a cocktail entitled ‘Dark and Stormy’, featuring a combination of Myers Rum, Angostura, Fresh Lime and Ginger Beer.  The cocktail menu is innovative and features several Italian classics such as the Aperol Spritz, Negroni and Bellini.  I was then served a glass of the red merlot, in a very cute little jug!

OrsoDark and stormy

OrsoWine jug

The menu is wide ranging, with pasta, risotto, and a variety of meat and fish, however, there are few vegetarian options for the main courses.  To start, I was offered a selection of dishes from the waiter’s choice: Zucchini Fritte, Calamari Fritte and the Sardinian Flatbread with Garlic and Rosemary.  All three dishes were excellent; the flatbread was crisp and slightly salted. #

Orsocourgette fries

Orsocalamari

Orsoflatbread

For the main course I had the Pollo alla Griglia, which was a grilled spring chicken seasoned with parsley and lemon, served on a bed of sliced cherry tomatoes.  The chicken was delicious and light, however could have benefitted from a side sauce.  I also sampled the mashed potatoes and garlic and rosemary potato side dishes.  Both were extremely tasty and complemented the chicken.  The food was well presented and served on, what looked like, hand painted plates, adding a homely feel.

Orsochicken

Orsopotatoes

The waiter informed us that the Fegato di Vitello was the most frequently ordered dish by customers, so my mother took his advice and ordered the liver which was very succulent.

Orsoliver

For dessert, we tried the Affogato and the Panna Cotta, which was beautifully presented.  To conclude, we had a cappuccino, and a fresh mint tea.

Orsopannacotta

Orsocappucino

The staff were friendly, attentive and welcoming.  The restaurant is popular among theatre goers, given its location in the heart of the theatre district.  It is even possible for customers to eat their starter and main before a play, and return afterwards for desert.  Its relaxed atmosphere makes it a suitable choice for a wide variety of party types, including children and families.

Orsobar

Overall, I would definitely recommend a trip to Orso.  It is excellent value for money, and has character, and is therefore a great change from the over-visited Italian chains in London.  The dishes were all of a consistent high quality, so you can rest assured that you will enjoy whatever you order.  On top of this, the excellent service ensures that customers have an enjoyable experience at Orso.

Nutella-chocolate-chip Cookies

nutella 1

Nutella is one of my favourite baking ingredients.  If you love Nutella, then these Nutella-chocolate-chip cookies are a must-try.  They are crisp on the outside, with a soft, gooey centre.  They are quick and easy to make, and the best part is they stay as tasty the next day!

photo

This recipe was recommended to me by a friend, and will make around 30 medium-sized cookies.

Overall preparation time: 20 mins

Ingredients:

475g plain flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/8 teaspoon salt
120g butter (melted)
140g caster sugar
120g brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla
60g Nutella
200g chocolate chips (I would recommend dark chocolate chips, as these complement the Nutella well)

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to gas mark 5 and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.

2. Mix the flour, baking soda and salt in a medium sized bowl using a wooden spoon.

3. In another bowl cream the butter,  sugar and the brown sugar using an electric mixer. Add the eggs and the vanilla and mix on medium speed until combined.

4. Add in the flour mixture on low speed until combined. Then add in 30g of Nutella and gently fold it into the mixture.  You don’t want to mix the Nutella into the batter too much, in order to get ‘nutella swirls’ in the cookies.nutella 2

5. Mix in the chocolate chips using a wooden spoon.

6. Scoop a small ball of dough into the palm of your hand and flatten.  Place a small dot of nutella in the centre and fold the edges of the dough around it, and flatten slightly.  Place the dough ball onto your baking tray.

nutella 3

7. Bake for about 8-10 minutes.  The cookies may feel soft when you remove them from the oven, but they will become crispier when cooled.

8. Remove cookies from try and let them cool on wire racks.

The Terrace, Harrods

Overview:

Overall rating: 4 stars

Price: £29 for Afternoon Tea
Cuisine: Afternoon Tea
Location: Knightsbridge

My thoughts:

I visited The Terrace at Harrods for Afternoon Tea as a post-exams treat.  Located on the Fourth Floor of the department store, it is the perfect place to relax after a day of shopping.  The restaurant is spacious and bright, with comfy armchairs for seating.   Visiting the restaurant itself is a great experience.  The grand and luxurious décor, in my mind, reminisces an environment close to something  you would find in an exquisite hotel such as the Bellagio, Las Vegas, unlike other tea rooms in London.  There is also the option to sit outside on the terrace.

harrods 4

The Afternoon tea itself is excellent value for money.  Between 3 of us we shared 2 tea platters, which was more than enough since they arrived piled high with cakes, scones, macaroons, sandwiches and much more!  The food is served along with your choice of tea or coffee.  For an additional £7 you can add a flute of champagne

harrods 1

The menu features a wide range of cakes and sandwiches to suit all tastes.  The restaurant also offers breakfast and lunch options.  The dark chocolate cake with a hazelnut base was particularly delicious and the scones were light and fluffy.

harrods 2

My favourite part of the tea was the sandwiches.  Their innovative fillings were unlike any other afternoon tea I had experienced before, and included a lobster roll! Other sandwiches included salmon, egg and beef, with different variations of bread.  The restaurant is vegetarian friendly, with the option to switch sandwiches upon request.harrods 3

The service was great, with welcoming, friendly and attentive staff to serve.  The terrace rooms were not particularly busy at the time of our visit (which was midweek).  However, booking in advance for large groups would be advised, to avoid disappointment.

Harrods is situated in Knightsbridge, and is easily accessible by tube, bus, car, or taxi.    Overall I would definitely recommend afternoon tea at the Terrace, Harrods, as a great place to visit for a special treat, or a tea break on a day out, due to its relaxing and comfortable environment and its delectable sweet treats and sandwiches.

Mojito Cupcakes

‘A cocktail in a cake’.

mojito3

Love mojitos? Can’t resist a cupcake? Then these mojito cupcakes are for you.

Whilst on holiday I visited Cacao Sweets & Treats in Grayslake, Illinois and came across the concept of alcoholic cupcakes. (www.cacaosweetsandtreats.com) They were so good that I decided to bake a batch myself! They really do taste like a real mojito, and make a perfect dessert!

Overall preparation time : 50 minutes

Ingredients:

For the Cupcakes:

  • 115ml buttermilk
  • 115g mint leaves, bruised
  • 350g all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoons baking powder
  • 0.25 teaspoon salt
  • 115g unsalted butter
  • 235g granulated sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • Zest and juice of 1.5 limes
  • 2 tablespoons white rum
  • 0.25 teaspoons vanilla extract

To brush the cupcakes:

  • 2 tablespoons white rum
  • 2 sprigs fresh mint

For the icing:

  • 150g unsalted butter
  • 400g icing sugar
  • 1.5 tablespoons lime juice
  • 3 tablespoons white rum

Method:

  • Preheat the oven to Gas Mark 3 and line a cupcake tin with paper cases
  • Bruise the mint leaves through tapping the leaves 10 – 15 times with the back of a spoon
  • Place the buttermilk and mint leaves (for the cakes) in a saucepan over a low heat and warm until the mixture starts to steam, but do not simmer.  Remove from the heat and cover.  Leave to steep for 30 minutes then strain the mixture into a bowl using a sieve.  Make sure to press on any buttermilk solids and mint leaves to extract as much liquid as possible.

mojito1

  • In a large bowl, beat the butter and sugar together until light and fluffy.  Add the eggs one at a time and beat thoroughly. (I would recommend using an electric mixture on medium-high speed!)
  • Add the lime zest, lime juice, vanilla extract and rum.  Mix until combined.  Add the flour, baking powder and salt to this bowl and then the buttermilk mixture.

mojito2

  • Place the batter in the paper cases and bake for 25 minutes, until golden.
  • While the cupcakes are baking, combine the rum and mint sprigs in a small saucepan and warm over a low heat and remove as soon as the mixture starts to simmer.  Steep until ready to use.
  • Remove the cupcakes from the oven and cool for 5 to 10 minutes.
  • Brush the tops of the cupcakes with the mint-infused rum.
  • To make the icing, whip the butter and the icing sugar until incorporated.  Add the lime juice and rum.
  • Frost the cupcakes and garnish with a lime wedge and mini-umbrella.  Enjoy!

The Gate, Arkley

‘The best pub in Hertfordshire’

Overview:

Price: £20 approx. for a three course meal

Overall rating: 4.5 stars

Cuisine: British

Location:  Arkley, Hertfordshire

gate5

Review:

The Gate is my favourite pub of all time.  It is exactly what you could expect of a great English pub: delicious food, a cosy, relaxed atmosphere, and exceptional service.  Having been a regular visitor for the past 10 years, I can safely say that the food quality is always consistently excellent.   I have never had a bad meal.

Gate lamb

The Gate is situated in the leafy suburb of Arkley.  Its recent renovation has only improved the décor, to make one feel at home.  Features such as a warm fireplace, the odd bookshelf, exposed wooden beams  and wall paintings create a cosy, homely environment perfect for a cold winter’s evening.  Conversely, during the summer their garden area provides the perfect space to relax with a cool drink.  The service is exceptional: the staff are friendly and polite and you won’t have to wait too long for your food.

gate4

The menu features ‘traditional pub grub’ including fish and chips or a steak and ale pie, alongside a wide variety of other meat, fish and vegetarian dishes to suit all tastes.    Look out for their ‘blackboard specials’ which regularly change.  The portions are large and filling and are definitely value-for-money. Having sampled most of the items on the menu I can safely say that whatever item you chose will be enjoyable, as all food options are consistent in their high quality and taste, and always served at the perfect temperature.  A must-have dish is the breaded mushrooms to start, served crispy and warm alongside garlic mayonnaise.  For any chip-lovers, I would definitely recommend their chunky chips that are served with many of the main course dishes.  The restaurant is family friendly, with an excellent children’s menu.

gate2

gate1

Unfortunately, bookings are not available, and the restaurant can get very busy at peak times during the weekend, so it is best to arrive early for dinner. However, if there is a wait for a table you can always enjoy a drink by the bar in the meantime.  The pub has a small car park, though this can get full very quickly during peak periods, however, parking is available on Barnet Road just outside the pub, if the car park is full.

Overall, I can wholeheartedly recommend a visit to The Gate.  It is the perfect setting for all occasions, a  family meal out, or a dinner with friends.  The food, service and ambiance all contribute to a fantastic dining experience, and it is always a reliable treat.

World’s Best Brownies

After eating MANY different types of brownies over my 21 years I can safely conclude that this brownie recipe is the best you can get.  These brownies have a soft and gooey centre with a crisp outer layer.  Perfect for a teatime treat!

Le Méridien Piccadilly’s Terrace Grill & Bar

‘A sun filled, spacious glass terrace overlooking London’s Piccadilly.’

6

Overview:

Price: £60+ for 3 courses

Overall rating: 4.5 stars

Cuisine: Modern European

Location:  Piccadilly

My thoughts:

The Terrace Grill and Bar at Le Meridien Hotel, Piccadilly is one of my new favourite London restaurants.  Its décor is sophisticated and spectacular; a sun filled, spacious glass terrace overlooking London’s Piccadilly, with a modern yet relaxed vibe making it a perfect place to dine.  A seat by the window is ideal, since the restaurant overlooks London’s Piccadilly.

5

I visited the Terrace Grill and Bar for lunch as a 21st birthday treat from my good friend Tania.  The restaurant is renowned for its meat and fish grills, however there are options available for vegetarians too. The menus vary slightly between lunch and dinner; I assume that the high quality of food carries through to dinner as well.  Every dish we sampled was cooked to perfection, extravagantly presented and fairly light, making a three course meal easily consumable.

To start, I ordered the confit chicken, which I can safely say is one of the best starter dishes I have ever had.  The chicken was moist and well complemented with the chutneys that dressed it.  Tania ordered the squid, which was served with a side of mango relish. Both blended together perfectly.  (photos of starters)  For our main course I ordered the chicken breast with chive mash from the Market Menu (which changes regularly) and Tania had the grilled lemon sole, which was lightly seasoned which allowed for the true taste of the lemon sole to prevail.

9

8

The deserts were fantastic, refreshing and light.  I had the chocolate tart which was served with a scoop of ice cream and Tania had the lemon syllabub.  Both were extremely enjoyable, (high praise coming from someone who doesn’t usually have a sweet tooth!)

 10

 11

The staff were friendly and attentive, contributing to the extremely enjoyable dining experience we had.  When we visited, the restaurant was fairly quiet, however, we were informed that crowds do start to appear around dinner time, therefore booking in advance would be a good idea, to avoid disappointment.  The dress code could be described as smart-casual and the restaurant would be a nice place to visit for a special occasion. I would definitely recommend the Terrace Grill and Bar since their food, service and ambience was exceptional.

A Tequila and Lime Cheesecake. ‘A cocktail in a cake’.

‘A cocktail in a cake’.

Love Margaritas?  Give this tequila and lime cheesecake recipe a go.

IMG_4510

On a recent visit to the USA I became a huge fan of the Cheesecake Factory.  I thought I’d try my hand at cheesecake making to fill the cheesecake-shaped gap in my life, since the Cheesecake Factory, sadly, does not have a UK branch *sob sob*.

This recipe is one I concocted myself, after some experimenting.  It is quick and easy to make and features a blend of flavours ranging from lime, ginger, and a hint of tequila, that blend together like a perfect Margarita cocktail. Deeeeelish.

Overall time needed: 30 minutes (note: needs to set overnight)

Ingredients:

  • 7 digestive biscuits
  • 4 ginger biscuits
  • 50g butter, melted
  • 25g caster sugar
  • 150ml double cream
  • 397g can full-fat condensed milk
  • 175g full-fat cream cheese (room temperature)
  • 3 tablespoons tequila
  • grated zest and juice of 4 limes
  • ½ lime, thinly sliced, to decorate

Method:

  • To make the biscuit base crush the digestive and ginger biscuits into tiny crumbs.  A good way of doing this is to place the biscuits in a sandwich bag and beat with a rolling pin. (Effective therapy for anyone with anger issues too!)

IMG_4414

IMG_4418

  • Melt the butter and sugar in a saucepan over a low heat and add the crushed biscuits to the pan.  Stir until thoroughly mixed.

IMG_4428

  • Turn the biscuit mixture into a 20cm (8in) circular loose-bottomed baking tin and press firmly and evenly over the bottom of the tin using the back of a metal spoon. Chill for 30 minutes in the fridge until set.

IMG_4430

  • Make the filling: place the double cream, condensed milk and cream cheese in a bowl with lime zests.  A tip for zesting the limes – use a cheese grater if you don’t have a zesting tool.  Mix thoroughly.

IMG_4439

  • Gradually mix in the lime juice and tequila and continue mixing until the mixture thickens.

IMG_4441

  • Pour the filling into the baking tin on top of the biscuit base and spread evenly using a spatula.
  • Cover with Clingfilm and chill overnight.  Then, your cheesecake will be ready to devour! Enjoy.
